With Fresh Capital Investment, Heat Pipe Technology Dramatically Reduces Lead Times For Global Delivery of Passive-Heat-Transfer Devices

HPT Can Accommodate Heightened Demand for “Passive Energy Conservation” Approach to Reducing HVAC Costs

Gainesville, FL – November 2, 2011 – Heat Pipe Technology, Inc., (HPT) a division of MiTek, a Berkshire Hathaway company (nyse: brk-a, nyse: brk-b), today announced that the company has made dramatic improvements to its manufacturing facility and product delivery times, as part of a fresh capital investment campaign.  The investment and improvements come at a time of rising demand for heat pipe solutions and the dramatic savings that passive-heat-transfer devices can bring to HVAC efficiency around the globe.

With 30,000 square feet of dedicated manufacturing at its Gainesville, Florida facility, HPT is a long-time global leader in implementing energy conservation technologies in large-scale air-conditioning systems. The Company is specifically focused on driving energy conservation, greatly enhancing dehumidification, and improving overall HVAC system performance through energy recovery. For example, HPT’s passive “Wrap-Around” moisture-removal dehumidification systems can increase HVAC systems dehumidification capability by up to 50%, at substantially lower costs than traditional air-conditioning methods.

HPT’s capital investment in the facility and process upgrades exceeds $600,000.  This capital investment, along with the material flow changes in the facility, reduced product delivery lead times by 33%. The investment also coincides with the implementation of Lean Manufacturing practices such as “5S”, Visual Manufacturing, and Kan Ban inventory control methods.  A new R&D area was added, including production offices on the production floor.  Additionally, new quality-control standards have tightened tolerances for purchasing specifications and manufacturing practices, and this has resulted in improved end-product quality.

“Our facility upgrade is just one example of a new aggressive posture for HPT in multiple areas including manufacturing, marketing outreach, and education,” said HPT’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Mazen Awad.  “As a result of just these initial efforts, we have seen an unprecedented level of interest in our passive energy conservation technology, and we expect that to continue.”
